Converge 2016 | Visual Arts Scotland

Scottish National Galleries Academy Building, Upper Galleries
The Mound, Edinburgh
Friday 29 January – Saturday 20 February 2016

Visual Arts Scotland has an unusual legacy in that it began as a society for women artists, then during the 1980s became a champion of craft makers and now gives an opportunity for artists, applied artists and makers to show together.  VAS has a distinctive point of difference, one which puts contemporary applied arts and design and its relationship with contemporary art at the heart of the debate.  VAS should offers a vital destination for emerging and established practitioners associated with Scotland to test out and exhibit challenging and ambitious works, installations and events which examine the role and interplay of both traditional crafts and emerging design technologies as a vehicles for distinctive visual ideas.
Our activity culminates each year, usually in February, at our Annual Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy. Members and non members alike are invited to propose work for the open submission section of the exhibition, from which the panel will select the most ambitious, intriguing and innovative submissions which consider and challenge the boundaries between fine art, design and applied arts. Curated elements of the exhibition vary from year to year with loose themes for the exhibition being guided by a selection of invited artists and selected recent graduates.
